This superb SM has been lovingly maintained since new and comes with a comprehensive history. Having originally been purchased by the dealer principal of Toronto Citroën in 1972, it was sold to a long-time owner in January 1973. In 1984 the car was refreshed and repainted in the original appealing deep teal blue. The interior is a study in elegance with its plush black leather, brushed aluminium fascia with ovoid dials and imposing centre console. The leather itself seems to be original with the driver’s seat showing some wear. This SM was imported into Australia in about 2009 and was acquired by the current owner in 2019. Unquestionably, Citroën’s breathtakingly bold Maserati-powered coupe is one of those classics that exudes far more charm than can be conveyed by photographs, especially so in such a rich dark colour. Only in comparatively recent years have these unique machines begun to be appreciated by non-marque aficionados and examples in such fabulous original condition are rare indeed. The combination of the later 3.0-litre V6 engine, which delivers considerably more torque, and the five-speed manual transmission with its charming chrome floorshift and prominent gate makes this car – which is surely among the very top rank of Citroën SMs in Australia – especially appealing.
