Nineteen sixty-one marked the closing of the Exner era of styling at Chrysler as the age of the tailfin was about to be brought to an abrupt conclusion. This was the second year of all-unitized body construction providing the car with a rigid platform and thus, a more solid feel on the road. In place of the controversial “donut or toilet seat” rear deck lid ornamentation, were subtle stamped ribs. Chrysler continued the crossbar split-grille with gun sight 300 ornament that went on to become a 300 tradition. This is one of just 337 convertibles produced of a total 1,617 Letter Cars for 1961.

The 300-G was billed as “Chrysler’s luxury sports car” and the company further referred to it as “A Unique Expression of Everything Great in an Automobile.” A 375 bhp 413 cu. in. “Wedge” V-8 was standard; 400 bhp optional, both with “Ram Induction” for better engine breathing and higher performance.

This striking 300-G finished in red with a white top and contrasting tan leather interior, is equipped with power steering, brakes, windows, top and swivel driver’s seat as well as a console-mounted tachometer and Chrysler’s push-button automatic transmission. It is the beneficiary of a complete cosmetic and mechanical restoration during the late-1990’s.

It became part of the McMullen Collection in July, 1998. McMullen loaned the car to Daimler Chrysler for a television advertisement concurrent with the introduction of the 300M to the Chrysler lineup. During its tenure in his collection, the car was never shown, but provided proper care while retaining its fine condition. It was purchased by the consigner in 2007. During his ownership, the transmission was rebuilt and a new water pump installed.
