Following his family‘s move from France to Canada, Swiss-born Louis Chevrolet worked for, amongst other manufacturers, de Dion Bouton in New York. He also established himself as a successful racing driver and it was his Buick-based special that attracted the attention of General Motor‘s William C. Durant. When Durant lost control of General Motors, he became interested in Louis‘ French-inspired designs for four and six cylinder engined cars. The first prototype, a 4.9 litre six, appeared in 1911 and in November that year Durant set up the Chevrolet Motor Car Co. Louis, however, was to leave the business in 1913. Meanwhile Chevrolet cars went from strength to strength and progressed from being typically American models to more individual machines.
