Beschreibung
1966 – Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport
Dutch registration
Chassis # A194376S103026
- Prepared to East Africa Safari Rally regulations
- Remarkable performances
- Wild and exciting car
In 1963 a dedicated group of General Motors engineers designed and built a small series of 5 lightweight Corvettes: the Grand Sport. The goal was to participate in International races like the Sebring 12h, Le Mans, Daytona and beat cars like the Cobra, and Ferrari 250 GTO. Halfway during the development program, GM Management unfortunately decided to cancel the project.
In 2011, Tachyon Engineering from Netherlands obtained a license from General Motors and Duntov Engineering USA to build a continuation racing version of The Corvette Grand Sport to FIA GTP2 specification. With the goal of competing in the 2013 East Africa Safari Rally they built a rally version of the Grand Sport. Extensive resources were spent in the development and fabrication of suspension and drive train components in order to deal with the rough Kenyan and Tanzanian roads. When the car was ready for testing in early 2013, they had spent well over 340 000 € in materials alone. After an intensive spring 2013 of testing, the team set off to Africa and successfully crossed the finish line after 9 days of rough roads, jumps, rivers and dust attaining an average speed of 190 Kilometers per hour on stages. It has been one of the stars of this edition, thanks to his physically imposing look and his monstrous 6.3 liter Chevrolet V8 engine which left a large smile on the numerous spectators smile on roadsides.
The car was recently accommodated with a brand new engine developing more than 450bhp reached at 4300 rpm. As an anecdote, it is written on the report the engine could reach 454bhp with larger exhausts…
This unique efficient and accessible purpose built car probably is ready to take part in the 2017 edition of the legendary Safari Rally or any other contemporary rough road event.
