British MI6 agent James Bond has never been a man to drive ordinary cars. Through the years, 007 has been at the wheel of great cars such as Bentley, Sunbeam, Lotus, BMW, and Aston Martin. Developed by Alpina and introduced in 2003 as the Z8 production run came to a close, this BMW Z8 Alpina Roadster was a special evolution of the standard Z8. While the original Z8 was a high-revving, manual-shifted performance roadster with a 4.9-litre V-8 engine from the M5, the Alpina version took a more refined, grand touring approach. Alpina replaced the M-tuned engine with a smoother 4.8-litre V-8 engine from the 745i, paired with a five-speed automatic transmission for improved comfort and drivability. Suspension was softened, 20-inch wheels were added, and the top speed limiter was removed, allowing for higher cruising speeds. Only 555 examples were built, all for the North American market. The Z8 Alpina was better suited for long-distance touring than the original Z8, blending exclusivity, luxury, and everyday usability, making it a more mature and balanced alternative for collectors and enthusiasts seeking both performance and comfort.
