The unique looks and quirky features of the BMW Z1 have left an enduring legacy. Designed by Harm Lagaay, the noteworthy head of Porsche’s styling department who had a four-year interlude with BMW in the 1980s, the Z1 raised eyebrows as soon as it was revealed in production form at the 1987 Frankfurt Motor Show.

Its covered headlights straddled the signature BMW “kidney” grille, while its high belt-line permitted a barchetta body shape made famous by vertically sliding doors. The Z1 was like nothing that had come before it, and the “Z” in its name encapsulated all elements of the Zukunft—or “future”—even surpassing the norms of today as a design ahead of its time. BMW made 8,000 examples of the Z1 between 1989 to 1991, forming the basis of the Z Series that later expanded to include the Z3, Z4, and Z8.

This example, finished in Toprot over a dark grey and camouflage interior, was completed by the BMW factory on 21 March 1989. At the time of cataloguing, the odometer reads just 350 kilometres, while the car is presented with a partial tool kit and a spare wheel. In recent years, the Z1 has been part of a museum display curated by the consigning owner; as a result buyers are encouraged to carry out a mechanical inspection prior to returning this car to the road, while this lot is offered for sale without registration papers. It is noted that some plastic body panels show signs of wear. The Z1 is an icon of 1980s styling and the opportunity to own such a well-preserved time-warp example is unlikely to be repeated soon.To view this car and others currently consigned to this auction, please visit the RM website at rmsothebys.com/en/auctions/mu22.
