The BMW R60/2 debuted in 1960. In addition to being a fantastic touring model, it was the perfect platform for the fitment of sidecars, which were a common addition. Noted for their Earles Fork front suspension, these motorcycles provided a steady and reassuring ride and are notably absent of front-end dive under heavy braking. Like BMW’s road car offerings, the company’s motorcycles became known for both reliability and performance, and the R60 was a hallmark of the brand’s capabilities. The model proved a success, with strong demand dictating production through 1969.

This particular example of the R60/2 features the desirable optional 6.5-gallon sport fuel tank and period-correct pinstriped Enduro Panniers. A US-spec example, it is further equipped with a Dutch-made Hollandia sidecar with optional weather gear and luggage rack. This BMW is reported to have been mechanically sorted in its current ownership. At the time of cataloguing, it showed only 3,976 miles, which is believed by the consignor to be correct; the motorcycle saw little use in the notable collection of Illinois’ Bill Jacobs, then spent many years as part of a static art display in a New York loft.

Boasting original finishes and details throughout, with the exception of the repainted sport tank, this R60/2 presents as a very striking and usable example of a vintage BMW motorcycle/sidecar setup.
