S85. Keep that little number in the back of your mind, because it's what everything here hinges on.

When BMW decided, in the early years of this century, to build a V10, it didn't come out of nowhere. They were right in the middle of their Formula 1 adventure with Williams, building ten-cylinder engines that, on the limiter, made a noise that stood the hairs up on the back of your neck. And the men in Munich thought: why not just let that philosophy loose on the public road? So the S85 was born, a naturally aspirated 5.0-litre V10 that only really starts to grin above 8,000 rpm and spits out its 507 bhp at 7,750 rpm. No turbo, no supercharger, no electric assistance. Purely aspirated, greedy, gloriously old-school unhinged.

That engine first lived in the M5, the four-door in a tie. But when BMW dropped it into the E63 M6, you got the very same monster in a suit you never want to take off: a coupé with a silhouette that still stands up today, rock solid. Long nose, muscular flanks, that rear end sitting there wide and self-assured. A grand tourer that pretended to be a supercar, and got away with it, too.

The SMG box is a story all of its own. Purists grumble about it, and yes, in stop-start traffic it behaves like a teenager still learning the clutch and not quite getting there. But put it in the most aggressive setting, pull the paddles, and those shift-kicks thump you in the back like a well-aimed jab. This isn't a dual-clutch smoothing everything over politely for you. This is raw, mechanical, involved. Driving the way it was meant to be.

Right, back to the M6 sitting here gleaming with us. Alpine White III, solid white, exactly the colour this car deserves. No frills, no metallic sparkle, just a crisp white that lets the lines do the talking. Inside: leather, four seats, the mood of a car that knows it's something special without ever having to shout about it.

And then the file. Because if there's one thing to watch on an S85, it's the rod bearings. That's the Achilles' heel of this engine, the reason many an enthusiast lies awake at night. This M6 began life in Germany, wandered around Italy for years (Bologna, Castel Maggiore, the place where they know what a good engine is) and came to the Netherlands in 2018. And wouldn't you know it, that's the very year the specialists at Gijsbertsen in Odijk pulled the engine out and gave it the full treatment.

We're talking bearing shells renewed, crankshaft bearings replaced, Vanos lines sorted, oil cooler replaced, clutch out, dual-mass flywheel out. Engine and crankshaft removed, fourteen hours of workshop time in it. A bill of over nine thousand euros incl. VAT, neatly backed up by an invoice you're welcome to inspect. This is exactly the work you want to see on an M6, and the work most examples have never had done.

And it doesn't stop there. In 2023 the car went over to Auto Arp in Bleiswijk for a complete brake overhaul: new discs front and rear, new pads all round, fresh brake fluid. Those brakes have barely covered any miles since and are effectively as new. A front oil seal was even done under warranty in 2023, because yes, you stay sharp even then.

So what you're buying here isn't the gamble the internet forums are full of horror stories about. This is an M6 with the most important work already done, documented, with receipts. Three owners, a paint report reading original white on every panel measured, and an MOT running until April 2027. A car that hasn't been thrashed but cherished, with an average yearly mileage a collector can sleep soundly on.

The last naturally aspirated V10 BMW ever put in a road car. There will never be another. The future is silent and hums along, and that's precisely why an S85 at full chat will soon sound like something from a lost era. This is your chance to own one before the rest of the world catches on to what they're giving away.

Wind the window down, find an empty tunnel, and let those ten cylinders explain to you why some things simply cannot be replaced.

Hand still resting on the gearlever,
Nick Slinger
