The now iconic M3 has been a staple in BMW’s lineup of cars for almost 40 years. The first generation of M3 was built upon the E30 generation of the 3 Series starting in 1986, with the second generation coming with the E36 generation in 1992 and the third generation with the E46 generation in 2000.

The E46 M3 was available in both coupe and convertible body styles and was powered by the 3.2L S54 straight-six engine rated at 338 hp and 269 lb-ft of torque. The engine could be mated to either a 6-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed SMG-II automated manual. That combination propelled the E46 M3 from 0-62 mph in 5.1 seconds with an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph. North American models had some slight differences in specifications which brought the figures down to 333 hp and 262 lb-ft of torque. A number of special editions were made, including a homologation M3 GTR. A total of 56,133 coupes and 29,633 convertibles were produced at the BMW Regensburg factory in Germany.

This particular example, Chassis # WBSBR93461EX21020, is one of the rarer convertible E46 M3s finished in striking black over a cinnamon leather interior and showing only 67,478 miles on the odometer. The car was imported into Newark, NJ from Belgium before being sold to its first owner in Pennsylvania. It was regularly serviced at Daniels BMW in Allentown, PA throughout the first owner’s six-year ownership period where it had the rod bearing recall done in 2005. It was later sold to its second owner in 2007 who continued the tradition of regularly servicing the car at Daniels BMW. The M3 changed hands again in 2011 to yet another PA owner.

CarFax reports that the last dealer service under the third owner was in September of 2015 at Daniels BMW, with a service gap lasting until June of 2020 when it received an emissions inspection at Halye’s Automotive. The last service record reported on the CarFax is another emissions inspection performed at Halye’s Automotive in August of 2021. BMW’s service records report that the car was serviced at a dealer in both April and May of 2021 but with no further details about the service performed.

When we received the M3 in May of 2022, we had some needed service performed at Leading Edge Autosport in West Chester, PA including new oil and filter, air filter, transmission fluid, new pinion seal and exhaust manifold to pipe gasket, new brake fluid, new tires, new lower oil pan cover gasket, and a new oil pump relief valve. It also received an interior detail, an exterior two-stage heavy paint correction, as well as an engine bay detail from Autocar Bespoke in Philadelphia, PA.

As it sits, this M3 is a clean, low-mileage example of BMW’s third generation of M3 with refinished wheels and some minor paintwork on the driver’s side. The high-performance 3.2L S54 I6 engine paired with the 6-speed manual transmission makes it a fantastic machine for reigning the local canyons or curves. Fancy more of a cruise down the boulevard? Drop the top and cruise away. With the striking and not often seen color combination this car wears, it’s almost certain you won’t pass another M3 that looks the same.

Upon purchase, the new owner will receive all available service records as well as the original owner’s manual and tools.
