Penned by Giorgetto Giugiaro, the sleek wedge-shaped BMW M1 was bred for competition with a spaceframe chassis designed by Gian Paolo Dallara and a lightweight glassfibre body built by Trasformazioni Italiana Resine. Munich’s motorsport ambitions were fulfilled by 56 examples built to compete in the BMW M1 Procar Championship and beyond, while the remaining 399 cars were destined for use on the road.

Among those road-going cars is the example offered—the 276th in the series—which was completed on 2 October 1980 in the appealing combination of Blau over a Schwarz interior. The M1 was first delivered to Switzerland via BMW (Schweiz) AG in Dielsdorf and was registered by its first owner in 1983. It remained with its original owner until being sold to a well-known German collector in May 2006, and was subsequently exported to Germany. The car was acquired by the consigning owner four years later, on 18 November 2010, and has remained in their care for the past 14 years.

Still wearing its original paint, this M1 benefits from an additional set of seats that offer a lower driving position than standard; the original seats are included in the sale.
