Designated “E9” by BMW, the replacement for the 2000 CS arrived in 1968. Aptly badged the 2800 CS, it featured a lengthened chassis and wheelbase to accommodate a new 160-horsepower 2.8-litre straight-six engine.
By 1971, further developments had been made, and the 3.0 CS and 3.0 CSi were launched. The former produced 180 PS, while the fuel-injected latter was rated at an impressive 200 PS. Either variant could be specified with a three-speed automatic gearbox or, the collectors’ favourite, a four-speed manual.
This 3.0 CSi left the factory on 2 June 1972, finished in Polaris Silver over a Marineblau leather interior, and was fitted with the four-speed manual gearbox. It was delivered new on 7 June via BMW Italia of Verona, and while little is known of its time in Italy, by September 2011 it was registered in Poland. It remained in the country until being bought by the consigning owner in 2015, and since then it has formed part of a museum exhibition. As a result of its time spent on static display, this car will require mechanical inspection prior to returning to road use. The odometer displayed 24,846 kilometres at time of cataloguing.
Second only to the celebrated 3.0 CSL in terms of power and exclusivity, the 3.0 CSi is one of the most collectible variants of E9. This example, with its attractive colour scheme and manual gearbox, is doubly desirable.
