Very few of the great English coachbuilding companies survived long after the Second World War; the workforce had been scattered, materials were scarce, and of course high taxation deterred many of the traditional clients. Prominent among the survivors were H J Mulliner and Park Ward, both of which built up very strong ties with Rolls-Royce and Bentley to cater for the remaining customers who wanted and could afford a premium coachbuilt car in the old tradition.
Special coachwork was offered not only on the Bentley S-Type Continental, which had no standard body, but also on the Rolls Royce Silver Cloud chassis too.
