By the 1950s Rolls-Royce and Bentley were bringing out new models of motorcars, in 1946 Bentley had launched their MkVI, a significant and new design, featuring a strong central chassis with independent wishbone/coil sprung front suspension, with servo assisted braking, powered by a 4,257 cc, six cylinder engine and twin eschew carburettors, quite capable of speeds of 90 miles per hour. In 1951, the R-Type was introduced as a further development of the MkVI, being enlarged in engine size to 4.5 litres with a standard factory body, adapted for larger luggage space and offered as an automatic, at the time a very advanced option. Several cars were specially ordered and sold as a chassis only, to be bodied by the clients preferred coachbuilder. Park Ward, later to be bought by Rolls-Royce, were at the time an independent company but a preferred coachbuilder and often used by Bentley and Rolls-Royce purchasers w
