Autobianchi was founded in 1955 as a laboratory for the giant Fiat. This new manufacturer allows it to test various technical or stylistic solutions without the negative repercussions in the event of failure damaging Fiat's image. The Stellina was unveiled in 1963 at the Turin Motor Show, with a body made of resin and fibreglass. Fiat tested this new material in order to adapt it to mass production. Autobianchi makes a steel platform to accommodate the resin bodywork. The first tests show a lack of rigidity that the bodywork cannot compensate for. The chassis will then be reinforced, increasing the overall weight of the car to 600 kg. For the mechanical part, Autobianchi opts for the 767 cc in-line four-cylinder engine powered by a Weber carburetor. This will develop 32 hp and will be combined with a four-speed gearbox, all installed in a rear overhang. In 1964, a hard top was offered and the four-cylinder was increased to 792 cc for 34 hp. Despite these developments, sales of the Stellina remained very low. Disappointed by the plastic bodywork, Autobianchi ceased production of the Stellina in 1965; the last examples were sold in 1966. In the end, only 502 copies of the little Italian car were produced, including 343 in its first version and 159 with the 792cc engine.
Delivered new in July 1964, this pretty Stellina spent the first years of her life in northern Italy. Registered for the first time in the province of Alexandria, she moved to Venice in 1968 where she stayed until the early 80s. This information comes from the previous French owner who acquired it in 2014. Passionate about Italian cars, he had done a lot of research to retrace the history of his Stellina. Restored to its original condition by its previous owner, it will be restored to its beautiful original Blue Azzuro colour, which can also be found on the original advertising brochure. The engine has recently been replaced but its current owner has kept the old one which can be given to its future owner. The little Autobianchi Stellina looks very well, works as we expected and is just waiting to be driven on a nice spring day.
