Aston Martin‘s customers had been clamouring for an eight-cylinder car for years, so the company designed a larger two-door saloon for V8 applications. The engine was not ready, however, so in 1967 the company released the DBS with the straight-six engine from the DB6. Two years later, Tadek Marek‘s V8 was ready, and Aston released the DBS V8. With the demise of the Vantage, the last of the straight-six models in 1973, the DBS V8, now called simply the Aston Martin V8, became the company‘s mainstream car for two decades. It was retired in favour of the Virage in 1990.
The Aston Martin V8 Volante was first produced in 1978 in response to American demand for a convertible version of the AM V8 coupe which had been in production since 1972. It was based on the Oscar India version of the V8, and shared the same 5,340cc V8
