The excellent straight six engine, designed by engineer Tadek Marek, was first fitted to the DB4. It was subsequently used to power the DB5 in a version with a capacity of close to four litres, achieved by increasing the bore by 4mm. Fitted with three S.U. HD8 carburettors, this engine produced some 282 bhp at a reasonable 5500 rpm, equating to 70 bhp per litre. This compared favourably with the Jaguar XK engines of the same period (265 bhp for 3.8-litre on the early E-Types). Other improvements over the DB4 included an alternator, a handbrake light, Sundym glass, Girling tandem master brake cylinders with dual brake servos and Armstrong dampers. The DB5 prototype, in effect a modified DB4 Vantage series V, starred as James Bond's car in the film " Goldfinger ". A DB5 is often distinguished from a DB4 by the elegant headlight fairing in plexiglass, although notably the last series V DB4s were also equipped with the same. From chassis no.1340 onwards, a five-speed ZF gearbox was fitted as standard. Although a little heavier than the DB4, the DB5 maintained a high performance, with a top speed of over 230 km/h and acceleration of 0 to 100 km/h in just over 7 seconds.
Sold new in France, the car was delivered by the Parisian marque dealer to Monsieur Haas, of 126 rue de Provence, Paris, on 20 February 1964. It came with a year's warranty from the manufacturer. The file, which will be given to the future owner, dates back to the 1970s. Various bills and correspondence indicate that a Monsieur Maurice Teisserenc, from Les Landes, owned the car in 1978. It later passed into the hands of Monsieur Scali, who kept the car from 1990 to 1997, when the current owner acquired it. A long-time passionate enthusiast of the marque, he told us he fell head over heels in love with this iconic model and its four-litre engine. This DB5 has benefitted from a complete mechanical overhaul carried out by the excellent Atelier Harper in Longport sur Orge. Numerous bills itemise the work that has been carried out on the car, testifying to the meticulous level of maintenance it has enjoyed. The engine was rebuilt in 1999, and the clutch, gearbox and rear axle in 2010. The car was delivered new in elegant Goodwood green with, according to the factory build sheet supplied by Aston Martin, a beige leather interior. However, the car's wonderful black leather interior appears to be genuinely original, displaying a splendid patina.
