1929 - Amilcar CGSS two-seater

Estimate: 80,000 – 100, 000 €

The 1929 Amilcar CGSS which we are offering for sale is even more desirable in that it is a genuine model and has undergone a complete restoration to the highest standards, as the file accompanying it confirms. It was bought complete and in running order in 2006 from a member of the Amilcar Club who had owned it for many years, by an enthusiastic engineer who had already worked on other cars. His first observation was that the wooden structure was old, but in very good condition. Unfortunately, the engine block could not be salvaged and was replaced by a 1244cc four-cylinder block (60 x 110mm) from a Type M, purchased from the Amilcar Club, which was equipped with a Cozette aluminium cylinder head, a period accessory which delivered a real increase in power. The four-speed gearbox, clutch rear axle and differential, steering box, brake drums, fuel tank, wiring loom and all the dashboard equipment are all correct for the model and have been meticulously overhauled to ensure that they work perfectly. To adapt this Amilcar to modern traffic conditions, its owner has fitted an electric fan as well as an electric starter, which can be replaced if need be by the traditional starting handle. Finally, to complete our look over this interesting CGSS, it should be noted that the black leather upholstery (with two offset seats) has been restored, the magnificent period steering wheel refurbished and revarnished, the aluminium bodywork repainted, and the tyres replaced with Blockley ‘Concours Classico’ (400x19) rubber. Since the restoration was completed in 2007, the Amilcar has covered only 5000km (3100 miles) and is in faultless concours condition. It is with regret that its owner is selling it today, because of problems with his back and knees which make it hard for him to climb on board.
Our road test confirmed that the Amilcar drives and handles perfectly; it is easy to run at 80km/h (50mph) and to savour in full the authentic experience of driving a pre-war sports car.
With just 984 cars built from 1927-1929 (according to Gilles Fournier’s book), with chassis numbers in the range 41001 – 41985, a CGSS like this is exceedingly rare and very highly sought after. With a few historic rallies under its wheels, it will take on the patina which so suits a model such as this.
