Alvis had limited success with the 14.75 from 1927 to 1929. Well, 492 cars in those days is a relative better than today, but it is still not a sales success, not even by Alvis standards. Too bad, because it was an innovative car for the brand, with a six-cylinder for the first time that would form the basis for all successors to the 14.75 until the war.
As with many other brands, Alvis depended on many coachbuilders for the construction of bodies. So there were many different versions. The Alvis you see here started life in late 1927 as a Maroon-colored 'saloon' but was later executed as an amazing-looking and very skillfully built Special with Silver Crest power source, which invites you to drive from the first second and has an unprecedented amount of presence .
Under the hood that opens on two sides is the 2,762 cc measuring six-cylinder with three carburetors from the 19.82 Silver Crest. Formidable sounding and good for 95 hp. This makes the 14.75 a smooth car because looking at the photos you will of course immediately see that we are not dealing with a very heavy car here. Very special at the time, and a first in the car world: Alvis was the first with a fully synchronized gearbox. The Silver Crest has four forward gears.
More beautiful than the numbers is of course the experience that this Alvis offers while driving. Few cars give the occupants a freer feeling than these kinds of pre-war classics. The compact space for the occupants, the minimal window, the long bonnet and an elbow that soon protrudes beyond the body: it is pure enjoyment with cars like this. Steering, speed, the sound, the typical steering characteristics, driving this Alvis is an exciting experience. Nothing better than taking the 14.75 on a Sunday morning, even before it gets busy on the road, for a ride on winding roads to start the day in the best possible way. During these kind of rides it is also noticeable how well this car is put together, everything about this car feels certain. The suspension feels very solid and the brakes work well, especially for a car of that era.
This copy is in absolute driver's condition. The technology is completely up to date and the car has really been used for what it is intended for: having fun. The body is not one according to the classic museum recipe. No deep shine, perfectly shiny chrome or the finest kind of leather upholstery. The body is very healthy but with a beautiful raw edge. Don't worry about a small stone chip: drive, drive, drive!
The interior is incredibly functional, with working gauges for all sorts of things and a huge steering wheel. The interior also shows that the car has been built with expertise.
The chassis of the Alvis is very healthy and looks good.
This Alvis is guaranteed to put a huge smile on your face. Fun and driving experience are central to this very successful Silver Crest Special based on the original Alvis chassis. The car comes with the original Registration Book and Car Record of the 14.75 that was used as a base and an original instruction book of the 19.82 engine. In addition, various blueprints and drawings are available with the car.
