About this Collectable

The Alfa Romeo SZ has without a doubt one of the most spectacular and controversial car designs of the last century. That alone makes this car an icon. Under the hood is also a legendary engine: the Busso V6. This example is number 31 of the 1.036 and has covered 27.500 km.

Most car manufacturers wouldn't even dare to release a car like this as a concept car, but Alfa showed they had guts in the late 1980s. The SZ with its revolutionary design was not only presented as a concept car but put into production as well. This was despite the fact that the car had already been nicknamed 'Il Mostro' (the Monster) inside Alfa Romeo.

While SZ stands for Sprint Zagato, there is little Zagato input to be found in the design. The foundation was laid by Fiat's Robert Opron, the man who went down in history as the designer of the Citroën SM and CX. This does not mean that the Zagato logos are on it for nothing: the SZ was built at Zagato.

The fact that Alfa outsourced the production to Zagato had everything to do with the very limited production output. With just 1.036 units built, the SZ is an absolute rarity. This particular example is one of the early examples: number 31.

The design plays of course a huge part in making the SZ a memorable car, but this is certainly not a car that has to rely solely only on its appearance. On the contrary. It's a pure-bred driver's car (as a real Alfa should be), with rear-wheel drive, a manual gearbox and above all: a Busso V6.

The SZ is based on the Alfa Romeo 75, the last real Alfa, according to many. For the SZ, Alfa took the 3.0 liter V6 from the top version, but not without making some upgrades here and there. As a result, the SZ has 210 hp and 245 Nm of torque. Is it the most powerful six-cylinder ever? No. Is it one of the best sounding six cylinders ever? Absolutely.

The performance is also excellent: according to Alfa Romeo you should be able to reach 245 km/h. The sprint to 100 is done by a skilled driver in less than 7 seconds. But more important is the handling.

In addition to the engine, the chassis has also been significantly modified compared to the 75. Alfa Corse, Alfa Romeo's racing department, has contributed to that. The result is a particularly tight chassis, thanks in part to Koni dampers and uniball bearings. The dampers are also adjustable, as is the ride height. This not only comes in very handy if you live in a speed bump-dense area, but also resulted in (for the time) incredible G-forces.

Since all SZs are identical, this one also has a Rosso Alfa exterior, with a beige interior. Why would you want anything else? It's a classic Alfa combination, which fits the car perfectly.

This SZ was originally delivered in Germany and has been in the Netherlands since 2000. The car has covered only 27.500 kilometers.
