Allright, tell me! Gorgeous, special, but not for me? There are no other choices available when it comes to the Alfa Romeo RZ. Perhaps the contrasting opinions are even greater with its closed brother: the Alfa Romeo SZ. The still present guarantee certificate shows us that this Alfa Romeo RZ was supplied to a Mr. Engelhardt of the German, Walsheim, Alfa Romeo dealership on the 30th June 1993. Further documentation reveals that this is one of fifty built in 1992. Before describing the car we have on offer, it is a good idea to expand a little on the Alfa Romeo RZ’s history. The Alfa Romeo RZ is the open-top variation of the Alfa Romeo SZ. The SZ is the production version of the “ES-30” concept car. ES standing for Experimental Sportscar- 3.0 litre. SZ stands for Sprint Zagato and RZ unsurprisingly for Roaster Zagato. Even though the world famous Studio Zagato logo is featured on the RZ, they were nor responsible for its design. The bodywork came from the Walter da Silva and Alberto Bertelli’s drawing board. Zagato only added a few small details and was responsible for assembling the SZ in first instance and later the RZ. The SZ and RZ are built on a shortened Alfa Romeo 75 base. The bodywork is completely made of synthetic material. Although superficially the RZ looks like a SZ with a hood, they are actually totally different cars. There were no less than 500 different parts in putting the RZ together in comparison to the SZ. Both cars were feted for their fantastic driving characteristics and stunning 3.0 V6 Busso engine. The transmission was also admired. Where the 75 3.0 was known for being troublesome when changing down, Alfa had corrected this foible after production of the 75 had ceased. The RZ profited from this

improvement and shifts perfectly. Alfa was planning to produced 350 RZ’s in addition to 1,000 SZ’s. Eventually only 278 RZ’s were built. This is number 23 and was built in December 1992. Back to Mr. Engelhardt and the fantastic car he put together. The “Nero” black exterior is complimented by the lovely red leather interior trim. The Alfa Romeo RZ has only clocked up some 19,493 verified kilometres and is still as good as new. The bodywork is in very good shape without signs of use. The synthetic panelwork aligns perfectly and is in great shape. The black paintwork is in very good condition. All four wheels are undamaged and have the correctly sized Pirelli’s. The hood is in perfect order and closes securely. Opening the hood is as easy as pie and works the same as when the car was new in 1993. A peep inside the car demonstrates the fine state of the interior trim. The seat leather, carpets and instrument panel, all look as good as new. More over even the sides of the drivers seat are unscathed. The dashboard leather is also perfect and goes to show that this car has mainly resided in dry and heated garages, it is truly marvellous to behold. The white instruments contrast nicely against the black synthetic materials and red leather. Mechanically this Alfa Romeo RZ is, thanks to perfect maintenance, in very good shape. The 3.0 V6 Busso engine delivers 210 Hp and 235 Nm, carrying the RZ form 0 to 100 km/hr in 7.5sec, through to a top speed of 230km/hr. The engine is supple enough to be driven in a relaxed fashion or sportively. The manual 5-speed transmission shifts with ease and without any play whatsoever. The characteristics on the road of this Alfa Romeo RZ is of a high standard, in part thanks to the Koni shocks that directly come out of the Alfa Romeo 75 IMSA racer. These 5cm hydraulically adjustable shocks allow you to move over road humps or drive into a parking garage. The RZ’s trans-axial placed gearbox gives the Alfa Romeo RZ a 54/46 weight distribution providing pleasant and predicable roadholding. This Alfa Romeo RZ is perfectly documented. It has a Zagato certificate, complete car wallet and a number of technical manuals. In addition to the latter the complete service history is supported by numerous invoices and log books. The very extensive amount of documentation is consistent with this Alfa Romeo RZ’s low mileage and extraordinary condition.
