The Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GTA 1600

Introduced in February of 1965, the Alfa Romeo GTA has become a thing of legend. Visually similar to the standard Giulia GT, it was comprehensively reengineered, transforming it from an affordable sports car to a spectacular giant-killer. A tremendous focus was placed on reducing weight; indeed, the A stands for alleggerita or lightened. The body was aluminum, with the exception of the roof, which was made from an exotic alloy, Peraluman 25, consisting of a blend of aluminum, magnesium, copper, and zinc. Alloy was used extensively throughout the inner structure as well. Sound deadening was removed, and Perspex side windows were fitted, along with bucket seats and more minimal rear seats in the Stradale (street) version.

Weight reduction aside, the GTA was upgraded mechanically as well, with specification varying from car to car. Most were fitted with a twin-plug cylinder head with significant headwork to improve the flow, a larger oil sump, an oil cooler, high-compression pistons, hotter cams, and balancing work. The driveline was upgraded with sliding-block suspension, a lightweight flywheel, magnesium bell housing, limited slip differential, and even hollow shafts inside the gearbox and drilled gears. The half shafts were hollow as well.

This Motorcar

The 1965 Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GTA 1600 we are offering here is chassis AR*613552 and is one of just 500 units produced. Supplied new to the Swiss market, the car left the works on the 18th of June 1965 and sold on the 25th of June to its first owner Diego Poltera of Breganzona in the Ticino Canton. The original colour was white with black leatherette to the interior. Upon delivery, however, Poltera required the colour to be changed to red. At a later stage during the 80s and still under the Poltera’s ownership, the car was imported to Italy by himself and subsequently sold to Max Roth of Germany. Very soon after in 1992 well-known collector and enthusiast Jurgen End, also from Germany, acquired 613552 as a completely original Stradale example. He would keep the car for nearly 25 years and participate in the most prominent historic events including the Tour Auto. The maintenance file records under Jürgen End’s ownership is substantial. Nearly EUR 200.000,- have been spent in engine rebuilds and maintenance program throughout all these years, making 613552 one of the most regarded and quickest GTAs on track! In 2012 the car was taken down to bare metal and restored to the highest standards by Swiss marque expert Ivo Salvadori. In 2015 we have handled the sale of 613552 once, after which it received another engine built for historic rally purpose. This remarkable example is one of those few GTAs left which still carries its original body shell and is accompanied with most of its original Stradale parts and its original crank case. The sale also includes a spare engine and transmission !

Offered with both FIA and FIVA papers, 613552 represents a great opportunity to acquire one of the fastest GTAs and take part in some of the most prestigious historic events.
