Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider
During the economic boom and thanks to the arrival of television, people began to dream of the comforts of Hollywood life. In this mood, Alfa Romeo's importer in the USA, Max Hoffman, asked the car manufacturer to produce a compact convertible, in order to win over the American public.
A competition was soon held, during which prototypes were proposed by Bertone and Pininfarina. But it was Pininfarina, led by Franco Martinengo, who won this challenge.
The Giulietta Spider was powered by a longitudinal four-cylinder in-line engine with a displacement of 1,290 cm³ and a power output of 65 bhp (80 bhp since 1958), which allowed the car to reach a top speed of 155 km/h (165 since 1958). The crankcase was in light alloy with cylinder liners in cast iron. The cylinder head was in light alloy, with a spark plug in the centre of the combustion chamber. The fuel system comprised a Solex carburettor, distribution with two valves per cylinder, arranged in a V, controlled by two chain-driven overhead camshafts. Drive is rear-wheel drive. The brakes are drum brakes on all four wheels. The front suspension has independent wheels, with deformable wishbones, coil springs, hydraulic telescopic dampers and anti-roll bar. The rear suspension has a rigid axle, guided by longitudinal arms and reaction triangle, again with coil springs and hydraulic telescopic dampers.
It was produced from 1955 onwards and was immediately a huge international success. The finish was very accurate. In 1956 they produced the so-called "first series" (series "750 D" in the "normal" version and "750 F" in the "Veloce" version), which had many different details than the prototypes and pre-series models: modified windshield, narrower headlight bezels, windows that descended but had no deflectors, doors with an inner lining (with visible screws), dashboard still in sheet metal with the upper part in black, glove compartment without a door, two-spoke steering wheel with horn ring and headlight flashing button with Giulietta Special lettering. In 1957 starting with chassis 1495*02208 the doors were fitted with a fixed deflector. Occasionally, however, until 1959, doors with only the downswept glass were still fitted. A light restyling with a floorpan lengthened by 5 cm. Round reflectors positioned under the rear lights. The engine now had an output of 80 hp. The interior had also undergone a few changes, such as the passenger seat, which could now be adjusted, and a convenient storage compartment, which in this new version had a door.
This magnificent example is one of the few (1007) Giulietta Spider 750Ds in perfect condition that are still in circulation. It was registered in 1956 in the United States and imported to Italy in 2010. The car arrived from the USA in poor condition but almost complete, the few parts used are all original Alfa Romeo, including the engine pistons. The restoration focused on the originality of the car. After some research this Giulietta was restored to its original colour. The paint was stripped by furnace instead of sandblasting. The red interiors were still present on the Giulietta when it arrived in Italy but were in a very bad state, so it was decided to carry out a total restoration by a specialist who also took care of the soft top, rebuilding it to measure. The engine was completely disassembled, checked, cleaned and reassembled as it was originally (and it runs like a clock). To date, it has covered only about 800 km since the restoration. We are in possession of a complete and documented restoration of bodywork, interior and mechanical parts as well as the Alfa Romeo certificate of origin (RIAR). The car will be auctioned at Milano AutoClassica 2021 in extraordinary condition.
