Rare "Speciale" version

French collector's title

The Second World War did not damage the reputation of Alfa Romeo which continued to win in competition. In the early 1950s, the brand wanted to dust off its road range and offer economical models without denying its sporting past. The Giulietta was born with this in mind, but also to improve the economic situation of the cloverleaf brand, which was denied financial aid by the Italian government. The Giulietta was the first of the manufacturer's models to bear a real name rather than a numerical one, and it democratised the sport dominated by the opulent 6C and 8C throughout the pre-war period.
The little car was offered in several versions and body styles with PininFarina for the cabriolet, Bertone for the coupé and Zagato for another very exclusive coupé. It was Boano, then working for Bertone, who was in charge of the Sprint version, the most widespread coupé in the range, powered by a small 4-cylinder 1.3L double overhead camshaft engine, which was particularly modern in design for the team and relatively sporty despite its small displacement.
Bertone considered the Sprint's design too heavy, so it planned to produce a more aerodynamic version in a small series in order to gain a few precious mph for the Giulietta.
The 'Sprint Special' series appeared in 1959 and remained in the brand's catalogue for seven years. It was a real stylistic success, with a design that could not be found anywhere else and was very daring for such a small car.
Just over 1,000 examples were produced in this style, which in some respects reminds us of the splendid Disco Volante designed by Touring in the early 1950s.
Our example was first registered in June 1962. 6,000 euros worth of work was carried out in 2019, including an overhaul of the cylinder head and valves, as well as an overhaul of the wiring harness and the passenger compartment.
Today the beautiful Italian car has a patinated but beautiful body, a beautiful interior in blue and grey leatherette, it is still as pleasant to look at as it was 65 years ago, its lines are engraved in the marble of timelessness."
