Beschreibung

1929 Alfa Romeo 1750SS 3rd Series Supercharged Spider.

One of around 50 original Supercharged 3rd Series 1750SS’s. Original “Threesome” coachwork by James Young to the design of UK concessionaire Freddie Stiles. Research would suggest there were perhaps 4 or 5 cars with similar bodies – one other example resides in the Simeone Museum in the U.S.

Delivered new to Mr. Tweedale in the North of England at the beginning of 1930. Mr. Tweedale was part of a wealthy industrialist family and passed the car on to his son for his 21st birthday. Tweedale Jr. later went on to enjoy success in rallies and trials, notably with Frazer Nash. The next owner was David Brown who would go on to own Aston Martin – he is photographed in 1933 in the car outside his family’s gear making business.

The car has a well – documented history, including more period photographs and was also the subject of a glowing “Autocar” magazine article in 1949. Original buff logbook records ownership through the 1950’s, including well-known Alfisti Laurence Sawers, and the last owner purchased the car from John Le Sage in 1964. He used the car regularly in VSCC competition throughout his ownership and it is well-known to the pre-war section of the Alfa Romeo Club. His ownership is also recorded in Peter Hull & Luigi Fusi’s 1968 book on the 1750.

Sympathetically restored in recent years – the car was completely stripped, with repairs to the ash frame as necessary but retaining the maximum possible amount of original timber. Likewise, the aluminium coachwork was repaired rather than replaced wherever possible. Finally, the car was refinished in its original colour, which was discovered on protected parts of the chassis when the car was dismantled. On completion the car was issued with a new FIVA passport and, importantly, the car has been accepted on to the Registro 1000 Miglia.

A supercharged 1750SS is one of the archetypical pre-war sportscars and the model enjoyed enormous competition success in period. Today, they are welcomed at all of the World’s most prestigious events and feature in most of the World’s significant collections.
