In contrast to the large, expensive, and exclusive models on which Alfa Romeo initially built its sterling reputation, the pioneering 1900 of 1950 charted a bold new course. Modern in design and construction, the 1900 featured unibody engineering and production-line assembly. Yet the advent of mass production did not mean a one-size-fits-all future for the Milanese automaker: Alfa Romeo continued to offer the 1900 chassis to coachbuilders, who used this competent, if modest, platform to create a variety of truly compelling machines.

The 1900C Super Sprint coupe by Carrozzeria Touring of Milan was among the most appealing of 1900-based offerings. Beginning in 1951, Touring built a five-window Berlinetta on 1900 underpinnings, and a beautifully proportioned, three-window coupe—constructed on Corto, or short, 1900 chassis—followed in 1953. Here, Touring used its famed “Superleggera” (Italian for “Superlight”) method of construction, in which a structural framework of small-diameter steel tubes are covered by thin alloy body panels. Of the 854 examples built, fewer than 200 are believed to have survived; this 1956 1900 C Super Sprint is one of them.

One of a mere 248 built for 1956, this chassis now sports a two-tone grey and silver finish over a red leather interior, an uncommon and stunning combination. It is currently equipped with a later iron-block 2.0-liter engine breathing through dual Weber carburetors, a performance and durability-enhancing upgrade said to have been carried out in the late 1950s. This is mated to a five-speed synchromesh transmission operated via a desirable floor shifter. A wood-rimmed Nardi steering wheel completes the car’s cabin.

Under previous ownership, the Touring coupe was fitted with Marchal driving lights—a period-correct and entirely appropriate choice, as the car would go on to participate in the 2008, 2009, and 2010 runnings of the California Mille, as well as the 2010 Copperstate 1000.

Its current owner acquired the car with similar intent. Under his care, the front suspension was overhauled, including the replacement of all bushings, and its Borrani wire wheels (complete with rare Alfa Romeo spinners) received new tires in 2019. He successfully completed the 2019 California Mille in the coupe, after which a new throwout bearing was installed. More recently, it was repainted by Custom Cars of La Grange, Illinois, and presents beautifully today.

An exceptional example of a rare and exciting postwar Alfa Romeo, this 1900C Super Sprint by Touring boasts both visual appeal and exhilarating performance. Regularly exercised over the past decade by enthusiastic owners, it is an ideal candidate for the world’s premiere tours and rallies and would be a rewarding addition to any collection. To view this car and others currently consigned to this auction, please visit the RM website at rmsothebys.com/en/auctions/am21.
