In a gathering of scooters of the 1950s, the one who rode a Formichino ("ant in Italian") was the king. With the sound of its angry 125cc two-stroke twin-cylinder revving at 6000rpm, the Rumi wore its shell frame in light alloy housing, in which was fitted the engine with a four-gearbox ordered by foot selector. It featured a swing arm rear suspension and streamlined headlamps to give this scooter the style that was the envy of riders of smaller motorcycles and scooters. It also had excellent road behavior with superb handling and a great agility. It is true that the design studio that the manufacturer engaged, that of engineer Salmaggi, who was also the designer to have developed the legendary Gilera Saturno.
The Rumi Formichino on offer has never been restored and has been conserved in a wonderfully original condition. It has belonged to the same family for a long time, used exclusively at their country house on the rolling hills around Barolo. This is a luxury model in blue - a period option, with 10-inch wheels, and aluminium foot rest marked with the letters 'Rumi'. It will be sold with a copy of its Italian chronology and must be the item of choice for all discerning scooter collectors.
