- A rare and original model
- The ancestor of the scooter

Ner-a-Car or "near a car", almost a car. That was the argument used by Carl Neracher to sell his motorcycle, manufactured in the United States and England (by Sheffield Simplex under license) between 1921 and 1928, a vehicle that is often times considered the ancestor of the scooter. This highly original craft was quite avant-garde, with its low- perimeter frame and its widely careened mechanicals. Transmission was by friction plates and the vehicle technically was closer to a cyclecar than a motorcycle, and the bike was powered by a single cylinder 220cc, or285cc, even a 350cc in England.
The Ner-a-Car that we are offering had been part of the collection of a British aristocrat for 50 years, who had moved to Tuscany in the 1950s. The vehicle received a conservative restoration there some 15 years ago and is in a very good original condition. Powered by a 285cc engine, it is complete with all its accessories from the period: a suspended saddle and pillion, headlamps and tail lamps in acetylene, the fishtail exhaust… The vehicle comes accompanied with its antique tools, and we had the chance to test-ride this highly innovative time machine.
By its condition and its provenance, this Ner-a-Car is a rare piece indeed, a fantastic example of motorcycling inventiveness that foretold far into the future.
