Ducati only enhanced its reputation as a leading Superbike World Championship manufacturer when Neil Hodgson, James Toseland, and Troy Bayliss each clinched titles atop its bikes between 2003 and 2006. Only Suzuki’s triumph in 2005 halted four consecutive years of Ducati victories. Of those successful campaigns, the Ducati 999 was the constant. The “triple-nine” was engineered from the ground upwards as a track-focused speed machine and—away from its Championship domination at the hands of professional riders—was available for public consumption in road-going form.
The 999R eked every ounce of performance out of the base 999 platform, revised in 2006 for greater power. With a marginally larger combustion chamber, the 999 cc “R” was rated at 148 horsepower for a claimed 0-100 km/h time of less than three seconds. The example offered here is finished in Fila livery, as a nod to the ‘bike that Hodgson rode to 1st place in the 2003 Superbike World Championship. The Ducati is accompanied by a motorcycle cover and paddock stand. To view this car and others currently consigned to this auction, please visit the RM website at rmsothebys.com/en/auctions/mu22.
