Coys at Blenheim Palace, 14 July 2012: Preview

1958 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster: £400,000 - 500,000

Coys’ forthcoming Oxfordshire sale is something of a bumper one. The catalogue is packed with over 120 entries, including 23 meeting the fine criterion that is the ‘Jaguar Legend’.

And of the non-Jaguar listings, buyers can choose from an eclectic mix of classics that range from a 1965 Volkswagen 21-window Samba Bus (£24,000 - 28,000) to a 1935 Mercedes-Benz 500K (£280,000 - 350,000). Along the way, there’s a £110,000 - 130,000, 1927 Rolls-Royce Phantom I Playboy Roadster and a 1992 Schuppan 962 CR at ‘Refer Department’ - it’s certainly varied.

The Jaguar section is headed by a fine 1965 E-type ‘Lightweight’, at £110,000 - 120,000, and includes examples of all the famous Coventry company’s classic models; XKs, ‘E’s, an SS100, an SS90, Mk IV, Mk V, and budget XJ and XJS – they’re all there.

Joining the 1937 Jaguar SS100 (£175,000 - 200,000) in Coys’ customarily extensive pre-War selection are a 1936 Bentley 4 1/4 Litre Open Tourer (£110,000 - 135,000), a 1930 Rolls-Royce Phantom II (‘Refer Department’) and a 1937 Riley 12/4 Lynx Sprite Open Tourer, an elegant sporting roadster in the best British tradition for £38,000 - 45,000.

Moving a little more up-to-date, the auction results could well be headlined by the 1958 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster estimated at £400,000 - 500,000. It’s joined by slightly more affordable drop-tops from Stuttgart which include a 1963 220SEb Cabriolet (£65,000 - 80,000) and a 1956 190SL for £55,000 - 65,000. That other Stuttgart car-maker, Porsche, is represented by four cars, including an example of a Classic Driver office favourite, the 1962 356 B Cabriolet, reasonably estimated at £55,000 - 65,000.

If your automotive interests veer more to the Italian, however, why not bid on the £35,000 - 40,000, 1987 Ferrari Testarosssa (one of two in the sale, as well as a Boxer)? Or the all-time classic, 1964 Alfa Romeo Giulia Spider for £24,000 - 30,000?

Given the beautiful Cotswold stone British location, the birthplace of Winston Churchill, though, let’s finish on some quintessentially British cars.

In addition to the high-quality pre-War cars from Jaguar, Bentley Rolls-Royce and Riley, there are two Aston Martins (a 2007 V8 Vantage for £36,000 - 45,000 and a RHD, automatic gearbox 1968 DB6 at £90,000 - 110,000). The 1985 Rolls-Royce Corniche Convertible (£35,000 - 45,000) is a LHD model in Porcelain White, while the navy blue, AC-engined 1955 AC Aceca represents possibly one of the last chances to buy one of these cars sub-£100k (Est. £80,000 - 100,000).

And for British quirkiness, there’s the amazing 1965 Peel Prototype P50 micro-car at £22,000 - 26,000, one of several space-saving, fuel-efficient entries in the catalogue. I look forward to seeing the successful bidder driving it back to London on the M40, post-event.

In addition to the motor cars, Coys will offer a selection of automobilia and fine sporting guns. There will also be the usual concours – always a popular distraction at Coys’ Blenheim sales.
