09/03/2012 Coys at Essen Techno Classica 24 March 2012: Preview
1963 Maserati Sebring Series 1: 78,000 - 100,000 euros
After a successful London sale, it’s off to the Essen Techno Classica exhibition for London-based house Coys. The 49-car catalogue features a variety of pre- and post-War classics, including a 1963 Maserati Sebring Series 1.
We’ve said it before, but there’s no harm in repeating the fact that compared with a DB Aston Martin, a 3500GT or Sebring Maserati represents very good value. This silver with red hide car’s estimate of 78,000 - 100,000 euros is probably more than it would have been not so long ago – a sure sign that as a collectors' marque, the Trident is very much resurgent.
There’s another Maserati in the sale, a red 1977 Khamsin for 38,000 - 50,000 euros. And for those hooked on 1960s Italian rarities, Coys will offer a 1963 OSCA 1600 GT2 Fissore Cabriolet, one of only two produced, for 58,000 - 75,000 euros and, holy of holies, a ‘refer Dept.’ 1963 ATS GTS.
1965 Porsche 911 to 'R' Specification - FIA Papers: 65,000 - 85,000 euros
Ferrari fans will be interested in the two cars that bookend the auction. Lot 101 is a 1976 Dino 208 GT4 (‘No Reserve’, for 12,000 - 16,000 euros) and Lot 148, last but one, is a 1989 Mondial once raced at the 1989 24 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps by ex-F1 drivers Keke Rosberg and Bertrand Gachot, partnered with Harald Huysman.
‘Refer Dept.’, please, for price on this interesting one-off in the annals of Ferrari history.
1981 BMW M1: 145,000 - 170,000 euros
But, of course, the sale will be held in Essen, at the world-famous Techno Classica event, so how about some home-grown entries? Top billing must go to the 400,000 - 500,000 euros, 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL ‘Gullwing’, while other 1950s Benzes to be offered on the day include no fewer than THREE 220 convertibles, all similarly estimated at 60,000 - 70,000 euros.
On the Porsche front, 11 cars will go under the hammer, ranging from a 1977 930 Turbo for 30,000 - 35,000 euros, to a 1955 356 Speedster at 140,000 - 180,000 euros.
1969 Chevrolet Corvette Roadster: 45,000 - 55,000 euros
1963 Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray: 58,000 - 70,000 euros
Of the pre-War cars, the ex-Jock McBain, Borders Reivers 1937 Jaguar SS100 3 ½ Litre (230,000 - 270,000 euros) is just the sort of thing for summer motoring, while other interesting entries include the 1936 MG SA 2.3 Litre Open Tourer by Charlesworth (58,000 - 70,000 euros) and the fine ‘Cricklewood Bentley’ recreation Le Mans Eight by Vintage Racing Green, based on a 1951 chassis and estimated at 180,000 - 220,000 euros.
And finally, American cars always have an enthusiastic following in Germany. The Coys Essen sale includes several from all eras (there’s even a 1919 Ford Model T Speedster for 15,000 - 25,000 euros), highlighted by a Saddle Tan, split-window 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray for 58,000 - 70,000 euros.

Viewing: Thursday 22 March from 10:00 to 18:00, Friday 23 March from 10:00 to 18:00, Saturday 24 March.
