19/10/2011 Gearbox Gifts: the Classic Car Gift Store
Gearbox Gifts, a business that’s just over a year old, offers a varied and immensely creative range of gifts and merchandise – all related to classic cars and historic motor racing.
Says business founder Richard Sellers, “From the days when I was wearing short trousers, right up until today, I have had a passion for cars – particularly classic and racing cars. This passion is not something I understand or try to make excuses for: I just can’t help it!”
His interest led him to working in the retail section of the motorsport industry and, more recently, to creating Gearbox Gifts: a company that represents his passion for, and knowledge of, classic cars and historic motor racing.
“Gearbox Gifts is a store for like-minded people, offering the most creative, high-quality and innovative classic car gifts and merchandise. Whether it’s a gift for a birthday, Father’s Day or Christmas, I endeavour to provide you with the greatest range to choose from.”
The business’s own-label products include classically styled novelty items, such as the wine bottle stopper and classic car umbrella, both featuring a gearshift design, through to fun stocking-fillers such as a Cool Motors ice-cube tray (perfect for that gin and tonic) and vintage racer USB hub.
Gearbox Gifts also offers a wide selection of Nicolas Hunziker clothing, based on his original artwork paintings. Grandnephew of Prince Bira, the Grand Prix driver of the 1950s, Nic studied at the Pasadena school of art and, along with his great passion for motor racing, developed a fantastic range of T-shirts which has proved very popular. He still spends a great deal of time painting commissions for car collectors, particularly in their garages – where he creates stunning murals.
Car designer Markus Haub also finds time to paint. Based in Barcelona, German-born Markus uses ‘mixed media’ to great effect, with his work based on photography. He manipulates the original photograph (such as your own car) and then prints it onto a large canvas, where he sets about painting onto it before applying a varnish. The results are dramatic; and Gearbox Gifts offers both original paintings and limited-edition, high-quality prints, finished with a silk-screen varnish.
Meanwhile, a range of limited-edition sculptures by Stéphane Dufour are perfect for Porsche and Lamborghini enthusiasts’ office desks. With minimal detailing, they have an instant and timeless appeal – much like the cars themselves.
“We also offer personalised gifts,” concludes Richard Sellers, “such as the Nick Mason and Mark Hales ‘Passion of Speed’ book, signed by the authors, with personal dedications available. Plus, for a fun seasonal gift, we can even print a photo of your car onto packs of milk chocolates!”
