Porsches long running 911 arrived in 1964, replacing the 356. Its rear engine layout was retained, but the 911 switched to unitary construction for the bodyshell, dropping the 356s VW-based suspension in favour of a more modern McPherson strut and trailing arm arrangement. Replacing the earlier four cylinder engine, the new model featured a flat six 1991cc unit developing 128bhp, rear mounted and air-cooled as before.
Production continued until 1989 with numerous upgrades and model variations along the way. The wheelbase was extended slightly in 1969 and the engine capacity grew steadily over the years, reaching 3.2 litres by the end. 1974 saw the first turbocharged model, with competition versions racing at LeMans.
The most iconic 911 model has to be the RS Carrera, of which just under 1600 examples were built in 1973. Powered by a 2.7 litre development of the 2.4 flat six, producing 210hp. The bodywork incorporated flared rear wheel arches and a distinctive ducktail rear spoiler. The model was homologated for International Competion by the FIA in Group 4. The majority of the cars were built in Touring specification, however there was also a Sport Lightweight version (utilising thinner gauge steel for some panels and thinner glass) and RSR racing version with a 2.8 300hp engine.
This Glacier Blue 911 was originally a 2.7 Carrera supplied to its first German owner in 1977 before being registered in the UK in 1981. The car was purchased by long time Porsche racer Des Winks in 1989 and then prepared as a race spec RS Lightweight replica. Preparation was completed by Bob Watson and fitted with a 2.7 RS spec engine competed in the 1993 Pirelli Porsche series. In 1995 the car was sold to Steve Rogers and then in 2004 to Mike Nisbet. Competing in the Scottish Classic Sports &amp, Saloons, he set a series track record at Knockhill in 2007.
