In the Thirties there were no luxury SUVs. No Suburbans, Expeditions or X5s. What was a well-off family to drive? It would be a Packard 7-passenger Touring Sedan. Room for everyone, with dad up front behind the wheel, mom and the daughters in the back, the youngsters on the jump seats and the heir apparent ensconced on the right side of the front seat watching dad drive the family and waiting for his turn at the wheel. There were no lap belts, let along shoulder belts, air bags and rear-facing kiddie chairs for the sub-40 pound offspring. There was, though, a quiet, smooth, powerful 473 cubic inch 60 degree V-12 under the hood with 175 horsepower. Power, luxury and space to spare and enough distance between the kids to minimize squabbling. This 1938 Packard 1608 Twelve 7-Passenger Touring Sedan served a single family in multiple generations for years, growing up in its jump seats and graduating to the driver s throne of power. It is unrestored, with probably one old repaint in blue with a white coachline and the original interior and carpets now showing the effects of years of pleasure and pride. The paint has issues, the carpets are ragged, the brown velour upholstery tired but largely sound and usable. It is equipped with dual enclosed sidemounts with mirrors, Packard hubcaps, trim rings, wide whitewall tires, Road and Fog Lamps , grille guard, front and rear heater, radio, rear seat footrests and recessed pulldown shades for the quarter and rear windows. It is a complete, sound, honest, straight, original car that neither needs nor offers any excuses for its age. In fact, it s proud of its three-quarters of a century of reliable, comfortable, quiet, powerful service. It is no Mercedes-Benz GL-Class, but it is a really sound, solid and elegant old automobile of impeccable honesty, style and quality.
