| 1959 Porsche 356 A 1600S Convertible D LHD Chassis # 86678 A genuine and rare ‘matching numbers’ LHD 1959 Porsche 356A 1600S - Convertible D. Designed immediately following and in the Speedster tradition, the Convertible D was in production for one model-year only, until it was then renamed the Roadster and the A body shape was discontinued and replaced by the T-5 B. Known as the Convertible D because the cars were bodied by the German coachwork firm Drautz, they retained all the spirit of the early Speedsters and yet whilst alike at first glance, offered a few simple but worthwhile improvements. – Namely more comfortable seats, wind-up glass side windows, plus an all weather top and higher windscreen, all of which added up to much improved comfort and practicality. Only 1,331 Convertible Ds were built between August 1958 and September 1959, before the T-5B Roadster was introduced. Chassis # 86678 is an excellent - corrosion free LHD ‘Black Plate’ – Californian car that was privately imported to the UK in 1989. Originally supplied in July 1959, finished in Silver Metallic (5706), the car was purchased via Porsche main dealer - Georg Rittersbacher, by a US serviceman stationed in West Germany. It was soon after exported to the dry state of California, USA, where it remained until 1989. A well-known car in the US registry, #86678 won numerous concours first prizes between 1978 and 1984 in Fresno, Oakland, Monterey and Santa Cruz. Since coming to the UK, the car has had just four further owners and was bare metal repainted in 1989 into its present, period-correct colour of Ruby Red, complete with an original black vinyl interior and hood. The car has always been well maintained in kept in exceptionally original condition. Since 2006, Maxted-Page & Prill Limited has carried out all maintenance and improvements. During the time we have maintained the car, the interior has been newly fitted with correct square weave carpet, the underside and interior cavities have all been fully rust-protected and treated with waxoyl and the car has been regular serviced and tuned with no expense spared. All work, which has been carried out, is fully documented on a comprehensive history file, which is offered with the car. We are delighted to offer this delightfully rare and exceptional Convertible D, complete with tool kit, tonneau and a fully documented history file, chassis #86678 is one of just five or so examples of its type, known to be registered in the UK today.
