The headlines ran: "No Tokyo trip for Jackie" and "He turned down an Olympic place for racing".

Yes, as London moves into week two of the 2012 Olympics, it's time to wind back the clock to 1964 when a youthful World Champion–to–be, Jackie Stewart, passed over the opportunity to represent his country at trap shooting to take up motor racing full time.

"I have won every major honour except the world title," he said, "but as No. 1 driver in the Ecurie Ecosse team I shall have to concentrate on my racing plans."

And the rest, of course, is... well, you know.

Continuing the Olympic theme, one can't help compare the talents of Stirling Moss with that of some of our modern cycling heroes.

In today's era of specialists, Moss's skills in every discipline of the sport seem an anachronism. Yet the British this week are basking in the glories of Bradley Wiggins, a cyclist who not only won the gruelling, 3,500km Tour de France, but then proceeded to trounce everyone in a modest, 44km time trial, winning Olympic gold.

And didn't Moss sport a spectacular set of sideburns in the late Sixties? That must be the connection.
