EDITORIAL

Poring over Bonhams' Aston Martin sale catalogue, and driving one of the leading entries earlier this week, set me thinking.

Go back less than 20 years to when the Virage Volante 6.3–Litre was built and, within the boundaries of safety and practicality, you could order an expensive car in pretty well any configuration that took your fancy.

Hence the limited–series Aston and Ferrari estates, and even wilder creations still to see the light of day, stashed away in the far corners of the world.

I'd draw the line at that sort of thing, but it would be nice to be in a position to say, "Well, I'd like the body bit from that car, and the engine set–up from this one..."

And before you say anything, I know it's still possible to go a bit off–piste on the paintwork and trim front. And have a bit of speed–derestricting and ECU chipping, and so forth. But it's not the same.

All the more reason, then, to have an interest in something such as the deliberately discreet Aston, or the one–of–177 Lamborghini Jaramas you see at the top of this page: truly the last days of personalisation.
