Is big beautiful? I'd say "not always", and as time goes by the overall increase in the size of cars is a slightly worrying trend.
It was brought home to me by a couple of things recently. First, I spotted an original Mini parked in the shadow of a Smart. Second, one of the McLaren MP4–12C's many virtues is its compact packaging.
This means that one can hustle it along relatively narrow country roads at a fair lick. It also helps when — on arriving at a small town on market day — the 'will it manage that gap between the cheese stall and the battered 2CV' conundrum needs resolution.
Too many times, the joy of pan–European travel in a big, fast car has been spoilt by its girth and cotton–reel wheels with low–profile tyres shouting "don't scratch me!"
No, not only can the 12C hit every apex, it can also avoid a Citroën H Van full of Pont–l'Évêque. Beat that, Ferrari, Porsche and Lamborghini.
