Classic Inside 40/2011

EDITORIAL

It's a competitive business, motor racing. The level of one–upmanship starts when the drivers and teams arrive at the circuit and does not stop until everything is safely (one hopes) tucked away on Sunday evening.

Be it the size of an F1 team's mobile village, or the serious historic racer's Winnebago, how one presents oneself in the paddock is a vital part of psyching out the opposition. And the set of wheels that you've arrived in is a good starting point.

I can remember seeing at least one 599 GTO at a recent all–Ferrari race and it's not uncommon to find the latest Aston/Bentley/Ferrari with a helmet bag, tickets and those all–important timing sheets strewn on the passenger seat.

'Beat that, if you can' is the implication. Okay, I will: it's the subject of one of this week's driving reports. No, not the 458 Spider, nor the MINI Coupé (no, no, NO) — it's the Citroën DS Décapotable.

Bowl up in that to next year's Le Mans Classic or Monaco Historics, hood down, looking suitably calm and assured and pole position's yours for the taking.
