The organisers of last weekend's concours in Florence had set themselves a bit of a task. By raising the bar to a level that specified one–offs, concepts and special designs, it was a tall order to assemble more than 80 suitable cars at the second running of 'Uniques'.
A Mercedes–Benz 300 SL Roadster, very much in the collectors' spotlight right now though it might be, is an impressive machine; but not so singular.
Look a little further, though, and the history of the car at Uniques (the first example exported to Saudi Arabia, in the same family ownership for three generations, with members of the Saudi and Abu Dhabi Royal Families frequent passengers) fully justifies its inclusion. Of its ilk, it is a 'special one'.
A fact which makes these events such fun, and whets the appetite for the ultimate in extraordinary occasions, next weekend's Goodwood Revival.
