Classic Inside 34/2011

EDITORIAL

From the time you pick up a car at San Francisco airport, spin the dial to KFOX 98.5 and head south on 101, Monterey car week is one of non–stop action.

Academics would do well to study the effects of discussing cars for seven days. You'd have to pity the mice, though, left 24 hours a day in cages lined with auction catalogues, with nothing but an occasional sip of chipotle sauce to maintain them.

The sustained effect of early starts, late nights and millions of dollars crossing the auction block is almost hallucinatory. Almost, I say, and I hope we've been able to give you an insight into yet another mega–Monterey in this week's newsletter.

Reflective thought for the week? Originality is all, and vehicles that exhibit patina, the 'unmolested' of so many car descriptions, have seen their value sky–rocket.

That, and the fact that in our eyes THE cars of the moment are 300 SL Roadsters and chrome–bumper 911s — both models which look superb in late–afternoon Californian sunshine.
