EDITORIAL

News is filtering back from our Editor in Monterey, of priceless tyre on immaculate turf, as the world's greatest concours cars gather for Sunday at Pebble Beach. But back in the more humdrum environs of the Classic Driver UK office, I'm also rather taken by the news of two unique Bugatti Veyrons that have just appeared in our Cars for Sale database.

It's not often you see a Veyron for sale - but two? From the same dealer? And very special ones at that.

I don't always feel a stirring for the latest squillion-horsepower supercar but there's something oh-so special about the Veyron. I remember my first ride in one, as a passenger, sadly; but at least that gave me an arguably better chance to concentrate on the sheer, unimaginable acceleration. But the best bit was the sound coming from behind our heads: the whirrings and growlings and general technically excellent goings-on responsible for our propulsion from 0 to silly-miles-per-hour in the blink of an eye. It's a bit like sitting in a jet plane as it accelerates down the runway. The last bit of the runway, that is. The bit just before you take off.

I envy anyone with the wherewithal to buy - and use - one of these fabulous machines. Or hey, why not buy two, since one is the open- topped Grand Sport, and the other a 1200HP Super Sport? Happy thoughts.

Panerai British Classic Week, 16-23 July 2011

This year’s Panerai British Classic Week in Cowes, on the Isle of Wight, saw 71 vintage and classic yachts facing weather that ranged from gales on the opening day (severe enough to put paid to the around-the-island race), to 20-knot-plus winds on the second day, plus a full spectrum of light breezes and rain throughout the remainder. Yet the camaraderie and friendly competition was as strong as ever. read more...
