EDITORIAL

'Aviation industry' and 'space age' are terms you might not immediately associate with Bristol Motors.

Prior to its recent incorporation into the British–based Frazer–Nash company, Bristol's aeronautical connections were firmly entrenched in that pioneering post–War period where the sky was not the limit; merely a stepping stone to the stars and beyond.

Sadly, Bristol Britannias no longer fly the trade routes of the Empire, and nor do Bristol motor cars traverse the motorways of Albion. Well, not as an alternative to a big Mercedes or a Bentley for any but the most determined aficionado of the marque (yes, I know, Sir Paul Smith et al...).

Having spent some time behind the wheel of a Bristol Fighter this week, though, and experiencing (from the back seat) one of Frazer–Nash Research's all–electric cars, I have to say that the future for the company has a distinctly bright glow. For all their barking madness, deep down, the cars are satisfying to drive. And this lot clearly know what they are doing on the technology front.

And the glimmer of light is not 1950s, 60–Watt–bulb beige, it's bright blue with the crackle of 21st Century science, and we all should be interested in what comes next, details of which we'll bring you next week on Classic Driver.
