The bleary–eyed who'd managed to turn up at the circuit early, last Saturday at Le Mans, were treated to a riveting 'Legends' historic race with the lead changing many times over its 45–minute duration.
"Wist, wist", went the now–those–were–the–days naysayers, little realising the exciting 24–hour race to come. A winning margin of just over 13 seconds is close for a clubbie 10–lapper, but after 24 hours? And when you consider the pressures the sole remaining Audi was under for over half the race, the victory has to be considered as one of the greatest ever.
For those fortunate enough to be in front of a TV later that Sunday afternoon, motor racing served up another extraordinary result in Montreal, with Jenson Button miraculously winning a rain–sodden Canadian Grand Prix.
It was a weekend that disproved the myth that 'motor racing is boring'. In the best possible way. And it was also the occasion that Sir Stirling Moss chose to announce that he had worn the famous Herbert Johnson helmet in competition for the last time.
What a great man; the only driver to have come close to Fangio, the most complete driver of his era and, since his enforced retirement from top–level racing in 1962, the very finest possible ambassador for our country and the sport.
He's always been very accomplished at the 'prosperous' bit, so we simply wish him a long, safe and happy retirement.
