Classic Inside 19/2011

EDITORIAL

Ah, James Hunt driving the wheels off the Hesketh 308, and a horde of brightly painted BMW Procars trading paint on Grand Prix tracks worldwide: iconic images both. And ones that definitely fall into the 'you wouldn’t see that today' category.

Potential purchasers of either car (both featured in this week's newsletter) could go the whole hog and kit themselves out with further accessories from the period. There'd be a BMW 528i, preferably metallic brown, LHD with 'yellow', French–regulation headlamps. Or a '74 Carrera RS, the rare one with the big arches and 'whale tail' wing, in brown, yellow or gold.

From a sartorial viewpoint, the stripey BMW Motorsport nylon jackets, coupled with flares and cowboy boots go well together — topped by a Barry Sheene (or Hunt himself) inspired bouffant hair–do.

Interestingly, a very 'plain Jane' car from the period, the honest–to–goodness Mercedes–Benz G–Wagen was launched in 1979.

What was then a strictly utilitarian, beautifully constructed workhorse for professionals has now morphed into a fashion statement, albeit still a wonderful machine, as the latest editions attest.

There's a symmetry to all this — the 'what's in and what's out', changing over the decades — which I like. Don't you agree?
