Classic Inside 14/2011

EDITORIAL

The red Ferrari 458 I saw in Hamburg the other day seemed a different car from the one heading this week's newsletter. I don't think that it's a colour thing, although a Grigio Titanio or Blu Tour de France example might have looked a touch more restrained.

I can only come to the inevitable conclusion that Wednesday's red Ferrari was observed by your Editor from a safe position on the pavement, while a couple of weeks ago I covered some 400+ miles in a day, safely strapped into some £5000's worth of carbonfibre racing seat, hands caressing the steering wheel, feet lightly dancing from... Well, you know the rest.

The Maranello manufacturer has achieved such greatness with this car that I find it difficult to conceive how, in any way, it could be bettered. But, such is progress, they no doubt will. Who'd have envisaged the 660HP, 6262cc all–wheel–drive FF, a 208mph four–seater?

No, you can draw all sorts of conclusions simply looking at a Ferrari 458; but only one, once you've driven it.
