Classic Inside 10/2011

EDITORIAL

So. Farewell then, Bristol Cars. Probably. Having steered a steady, if somewhat secretive, course since the end of the War, the luxury car maker has finally hit the buffers at the end of an overgrown, long–abandoned branch line of motor manufacture.

It is, we are all agreed, a shame; but not exactly unexpected. As things stand, the company's name and assets are to be sold to the highest bidder. The level of interest worldwide, I am told, has been extraordinary.

It is ironic that a company so lacking buyers for its products should have so many possible purchasers for it in its entirety. Perhaps an owner will have that 'Victor Kiam' moment and buy a company he or she "liked so much".

No such worries for McLaren, which must have an order list for the new MP4–12C stretching from Woking half way to the moon. I managed a couple of laps in the outrageously fast new car last Friday.

And at the Ascari racetrack in Spain earlier this week, Aston Martin lifted the wraps off its V8 Vantage S. You can read the review of this impressive car, plus the most talked–about supercar of 2011, in this week's newsletter.
