Classic Inside 04/2011

EDITORIAL

Trying to keep my powder dry for an overview of the Scottsdale scene we hope to publish next week, I would simply comment that seeing over $150m trading hands in just a few days is one of life's more extraordinary experiences.

You won't come across many classics on the road out there, and there's little else to do apart from a visit to the sales and generally put the world to rights with friends new and old. That's not quite correct, though, as the Barrett–Jackson event arena — the place where a La–Z–Boy would be considered Charles Eames cool — has to be done by any serious car fan.

For the genuine body–in–the–trunk, Winchester–pump–under–the–seat lifestyle, it has no equal. And I'm not knocking it: the stick shift, double–black 'Cuda did have its attractions.

It's off to Kuwait for me next week, for some more winter sun and the country's 2011 Concours d'Elegance. Don't forget Rétromobile in Paris starts on Tuesday.

With two significant auctions and a wealth of interesting cars on display in Paris, it's going to be the best in recent years.
