Maybe I should be getting out more, but the most impressive thing I've seen all week was sprouting from the transmission tunnel of the Prodrive–prepared MINI WRC challenger. It was the car's black–treated (I doubt whether mere 'paint' would be up to the job) gearlever that operates the Xtrac 6–speed, sequential gearbox.
The car, in laboratory–fresh condition, was on display at BMW's annual press event, alongside a vibrant–in–colour 1 Series M Coupé, an S1000RR motorcycle and carbonfibre componentry of the Mega City Vehicle, a 'zero emissions' prototype.
I do like a no–expense–spared competition car. The chunky MINI was in 'motor show' condition; the mud and gravel will come in 2011. The driver is seated well back in the shell, with a simple, small steering wheel and two all–black levers comfortably at hand level, one for the handbrake, one for the gears.
Someone had clearly spent some time on that gearlever: tall, yet beautifully proportioned, the willowy stick would have brought an admiring smile from Ettore Bugatti.
