It has, clearly, been worth the wait. Richard Bremner's superb write–up of driving the all–new Stratos reveals a car that has exceeded all expectations.

The Ferrari 430 Scuderia–based device performs as strongly as its specification suggests, but it's the integrity of the design, the solidity of build and the sheer superlative finish of what is (at present) a one–off that impresses the most.

Interestingly, in a separate development this week, the news came out — via a wonderful 1/8 scale, handbuilt model — of the possible racing debut of the new Stratos, in the FIA's GT2 category. I'm not so sure about that, as the original was, first and foremost, a rally car.

Warm clothing goes with the muddy sport, and I'm cosy in my anorak right now, convinced that the French blue mock–up is based on Bernard Darniche's late–1970s multiple–rally–winner.

Whatever they decide to do with it, I raise my woolly hat to them, and hope that something more than a very limited run of cars will be produced.
