Hats off to the intrepid Peking to Paris drivers, I say.
It is, by all accounts, a frightfully long way. So, when you consider the age of the competing vehicles (45 years, in the case of our featured DB5), it's quite some achievement. That said, a glance down the entry list reveals a 1907 Itala (good in rough going, apparently, due to its high ground clearance and narrow wheels and tyres) and a 1922 F.N. motorcycle.
The latter finished, winning a well–deserved bronze medal and the unofficial Classic Driver 'Order of the Bath' — the 'long, hot soak in one' variety, that is.
In contrast, my experiences behind the wheel of a C–type Jaguar this week are more modest. Mind you, these fabulous cars were entered in some of the most gruelling early 50s events, such as the Mille Miglia and Carrera Panamericana. It must have been quite something to stay in the seat, let alone on the road, in those days.
The cream Jaguar, as well as the famous 'Bond' DB5, will be auctioned in London this coming Wednesday. We'll be there, publishing the official results as soon as they are released.
